Oppo commits to integrating generative AI into all their smartphones

The China-based company revealed plans to extend the reach of generative AI features from its flagship models to its most budget-friendly series.

In a statement, Oppo explained it is collaborating with Google, Microsoft, MediaTek, and other partners to provide enhanced AI features on all devices, while also developing its own AI capabilities.

Oppo’s GM of AI products, Nicole Zhang, indicated that the shift to AI-powered phones will be a gradual process that will “continuously transform the mobile experience.”

AI capabilities are becoming crucial selling points for smartphones across all market segments. According to Counterpoint Research, generative AI-capable models accounted for 6 percent of global sales in Q1, up from 1.3 percent in Q4 2023.

Oppo referenced an IDC forecast predicting a 250 percent increase in global shipments of AI-powered handsets in the sub-$1,000 segment this year, reaching 35 million units.

Meanwhile, Apple is reportedly close to a deal to integrate OpenAI’s ChatGPT generative AI features in its upcoming iOS 18, while Samsung is using Google’s Gemini to power AI features in its latest devices.
